Axim x51v output at 1024x768
Can it manage it?
I have a VGA out cable and can display screen contents on another monitor using the mirror mode, but only at 640x480

I have seen reviews of presentation software however, that seem to indicate that it can handle up to at least 1024x768.

So can it handle this resolution, and if so how?

Sure it can hadle it, but you need a driver to control the resolution on the external monitor.

I use Nyditot Virtual Display, which works realy nice, see more here: Nyditot
