Pocket C64 - Commodore 64 emulator for Pocket PC
http://www.clickgamer.com/pocketc64/

So anyone want to try it? Never owned a Commodore so I'm not too excited, but I know how you people are.

Though "California Games" looks good. I played it on my old Apple ][e...

I actually ordered it 4 hours ago!!!
I'll tell you all about it!!!!

...

..
.
hmmm

OK, I WOULD tell you all about it, if they'd send me an unlock code!!! I can't believe the hassle for a $7 program!!!!

I mean, come on!! I'm an impulse shopper! That's why I order software online! Instant gratification!!!

I was concerned about ordering something with a reg-code, because of the hard reset concept.. I lose it, I re-install. Do I have to re-register for another code when I re-load it??

But now, I don't even have it yet to know about that!!!

Yes, I can play the demo, for all of.. what.. 2 minutes or so...

Not a good start...

I think I'll avoid www.clickgamer.com in the future.... Hopefully, it will be a good product tho..

signed - frustrated... and waiting... and waiting.. and waiting..

OK, got my key..
Set it up...

I can now run for more than 5 minutes...

So, Ultima I still plays great...

Ultima II loads fine, but when I went to switch disks to disk 2, it reset the virtual 64 everytime I swap disks.. Hmmmm

I email the company...

Quick reply (Much quicker than getting my key!!), and they said it's been fixed, download again!!

Kual, I've got version 1.0. I download er.. version 1.0?? Hmmm.. Oh well.. I get it, install it. Version 1.0.. er...

Try it... It's FIXED!! Yeay!! But still Version 1.0?? C'mon....

Anyway, might be a small throttling issue with Ultima II (maybe, have to fire up the PC emulator to compare), but it plays...

Download Thrust.. It uses the SHIFT key to thrust the ship (power). I tap SHIFT on the virtual keyboard.. and die..
OK, I was never great, but.. Some more testing..
The virtual shift key doesn't work in direct mode (it toggles the virtual keyboard)..
However, I mapped the SHIFT key to a button, and that works...

Good things..

Lots of Screen resolutions. Just by tapping on the Video part of the screen (as opposed to the virtual keyboard), you cycle thru screen modes. 12 Modes in all. 4 in standard (Axim, upright), 4 in Landscape, and 4 in reversed Landscape.
With the Landscape mode tho, you loose the virtual keyboard, but if you've mapped buttons or use the joystick only (DPad), it's great...

Speed. Impressive!!!

With sound, I haven't noticed any problems, although some of the screen modes are slower, but not very noticably...

Haven't had much time with it to really do more than kick the tires, but so far, it's a well performing emulator...

I also picked this up on the 20th, but I had no problem. As soon as I ordered it, then sent in my device ID, the e-mail was waiting for me. Also got some quick responses from the developer.

The speed seems dependent on how much is going on graphically. Even in a single display mode, it slows down when more stuff starts happening onscreen. The widescreen modes look great, but run very slowly.

The control setup is really good--it lets you select any buttons on your Axim to use as the joystick commands. C64 joysticks only had four direction switches (for eight-way direction) and a fire button, so you're not missing anything. It provides for two joysticks, but that's only useful in turn-based games.

One thing--make sure your volume is at a good level, because you can't minimize. You have to save a 'snapshot' of the game, then exit and restart. The load/save function works well, though.

Also, make sure that the repeat rate on your DPad is sped up enough. If you leave it on the default (settings >> buttons), it doesn't respond very well.

Otherwise, this is a good product. All the C64 games are free, so fur US$7, you've got unlimited nostalgia.

There's a free c64 emulator call 'comeback 64' or something -- its been pulled from the official webpage. Anyone compared that tot his new retail version?

Cheers.

I looked around ALOT for it..

But I finally got some information that it doesn't support disk images, just cartridge (or tape) files.

So it wasn't going to work for the games I wanted anyway.

Ultima series and the TSR AD&D series. All multidisk..

p.s. A HUGE plus for save states... I got Champions of Krynn, and loaded it up.. And it wasn't cracked, so it asked for the code from the codewheel. Well, after searching on the Internet, I found a PDF that has the codewheel scanned in EVERY POSSIBLE combination (Yeah, I know, crazy!! LOTS of pages!!). SO I found the code, entered it in.. And SAVE STATE!!!
Now I just go straight to there... Yeay!! (Just need to remember if I need a blank disk for the SAVE game disk.. I did own Krynn for the 64, but it's been awhile... :-)

Also, I loaded up ccs64 on the PC and ran it, and Ultima II runs the same on it as it does on the Axim.. I started the Ultima series on the 64 with Ultima III, so I didn't remember.. I could have booted it up on my Apple IIe (No, not the emulator), but I didn't think comparing it to the Apple version was as good..

And, I got Impossible Mission!! It plays great, even the Voice and the SCREAMS when he falls thru the floor... AAaaaarrrrgggghhh!!
I used to do that just to freak out my neice.. She hated it.. :-)

I'm liking Pocket C64 more and more...

One issue.. You get your best (most accurate) resolution with the Landscape modes. Best for reading text, but no keypad in that mode. Luckily, you can tap LOW to go back to Portrait and a keypad, but I think I'd prefer a landscaped keypad of some type.. But it would only be usefull for text adventures..

Wasteland RULES! My Axim should be here in a few days and I've already got the Apple IIe emulator so I can play Wasteland. That will make the boring meetings go by faster =)

I loved my Apple 2e. Can I ask you which emulator you're using and where you got?

Hey, I used to really enjoy the funny looks I got when I told people that my Commodore 64 (also VIC-20 and C-128) had more K than it took to get to the moon the first time!

And how many people still have those actual machines in their closets like I do?

Anyone need some C64 programs or hardware?

Not to get too far off topic, but....
I remember when I finally had enough money to afford a Vic-20. I couldn't afford a tape drive, though. So, I'd type in programs from magazines like Compute!, run them, then have to watch the programs die as I turned off the machine.

I don't recall what ever happened to my Vic-20. It's probably buried underground somewhere in a landfill.

Kind of interesting to recall my path through game consoles and computers:

Atari 2600
Intellivision
Vic-20
Apple 2e
Loads of PC's starting with a 286
X-Box

And now I'm using a PocketPC to re-live my Apple 2e days. (Sorry, there's not much I care to re-live on my Vic-20, although the C-64 emulators have got me interested.)
