Accessing the Internet using a Bluetooth equipped Cellular Phone

The ability to access the Internet using a Bluetooth equipped cellular phone is something that most people have an interest in doing.  Having a Bluetooth cellular phone provides a huge advantage to mobile users.  They have the option to access the Internet from anywhere without the need of a WiFi hotspot, landline phone for a modem, Ethernet connection or another PC available with Bluetooth access.  These users have the freedom to get on the Internet from the car, boat or any other place where a wireless or physical connection is not possible.  In order to use this you must make sure that you have wireless data service through your phone carrier.  In this section you must pair your phone to the PDA.

  1. Make sure that your Bluetooth radio is active and your cellular phone is in discovery mode so that it is visible.

  2. Open Bluetooth Manager on the PDA.  Select New.  Tap on 'Connect to Internet via phone' and tap Next.

  3. Select the type of cellular phone that you have.  Chances are your phone may not be in the list.  You can select the default option 'Phone not in list'.  For my particular phone the Ericsson T68 matches very closely with my Sony-Ericsson T608.  Tap Next.  The next screen gives some brief instructions on setting up the Ericsson phone.  Tap Next.

  4. Your PDA will not try to detect any Bluetooth equipped cellular phones within range.  The PDA should find your cellular phone.  Tap on the detected phone and tap Next.  The next screen will prompt you for a passkey.  I would recommend using a numeric passkey which would be much easier to enter on your phone.  Enter the passkey and tap next.  Your phone will then alert you that a connection is attempted and if you want to accept it.  Accept the connection.  It will then prompt you to enter a passkey.  Enter the same passkey you entered on the PDA.

  5. Once the passkey is entered both devices will be paired and a shortcut icon will be created.  This time tap twice on the shortcut icon.  A Dial-Up connection window will appear.  Tap on New Connection and tap on OK.

  6. In the New Dial-Up Connection window enter your information to connect to the internet through your service provider.  In my case I am using SprintPCS.  The phone number to connection to the Vision service is #777.  This is a local call.  Tap OK.
NOTE:  Connections to other carrier networks are as follows:
    Verizon: #777
    T-Mobile: #99
    AT&T: *99#
The network Login screen will then appear.  For SprintPCS customers leave the User name and the Password blank.  For Verizon customers use <your phone number>@vzw3G.com as the User name and vzw as the Password.  For T-Mobile customers leave the User name and the Password blank.  For AT&T customers type in 'A' as the User name and 'A' for the Password.  For all carriers leave the Domain field blank.  Since I don't have any other service than SprintPCS I cannot verify other carriers.  All of the info that I have included was based on research.  Tap on the OK button.

  7. Your PDA will now attempt to connect to your carriers service based on the information that you provided.  If successful you should see your phone dialing to the carrier to connect.  Once connected your shortcut icon in the Bluetooth Manager will have green arrows.  You should then be able to surf the Internet via PIE or access any other Internet services.

If you have an ISP that you want to use to access the Internet then the process is the same.  Instead of using the phone number to access the cellular carriers network (in my case #777) you would just enter the phone number of the ISP to access.  Then you would have to enter your User name and Password that you use for your ISP's account.  The PDA will then dial the ISP's number using your cellular phone.
